Processing fractions and proportions: An fMRI study

چکیده
Number cognition is important both for the society and for the individual. The disorder of number cognition (developmental dyscalculia) can havemajor impact on individual life quality. Several children and adults experience problemswith one aspect of ‘arithmetic syntax’, the representation of place value structure. Here we provide the first cognitive neuroscience investigation of place value representation. Our study systematically contrasted semantic (the numerical distance effect) and syntactic (place value structure) violations in a mental addition verification task. Participants verified additions with fourdigit numbers. Semantic incongruencies elicited theN400 ERP effect. A centro-parietal (putative P600) effect to place-value violationswas not related to arithmetic syntax. Rather, this effect was an enlarged P3b reflecting different surprise values of place value vs. non-place value violations. This potential confound should be considered in numerical cognition experiments. The latency of the N400 and P3a effects were differentially affected byplace-value analysis. The amplitude of the P3a and that of a fronto-central positive effect (FP600) was sensitive to place value analysis and digit content. Results suggest that ERPs can index the syntactical analysis of multi-digit numbers. Both ERP and behavioral data confirmed thatmulti-digit numberswere decomposed into their constituent digits, rather than evaluated holistically. These findings enable the detailed investigation of place value representation in both normal and dyscalculic populations.

Different olfactory perception in heroin addicts: an fMRI study
Background: Addiction as a mental disorder has large adverse effects on brain health. It alters brain structure and deteriorates brain functionality. Impairment of brain cognition in drug addiction is illustrated in many previous works; however, olfactory perception in addiction and in particular the neuronal mechanisms of it are rarely studied. Methods: In this experiment, we recruited 20 he...
متن کاملEffect of Physiological noise on Thoraco-Lumbar spinal cord fMRI in 3T Magnetic field
Introduction: Functional MRI methods have been used to study sensorimotor processing in the brain and the Spinal cord. However, these techniques confront unwanted contributions to the measured signal from physiological fluctuations. For the spinal cord imaging, most of the challenges are consequences of cardiac and respiratory movement artifacts that are considered as signifi...

Introduction: This study was aimed to investigate the beneficial effects of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data in treatment planning for patients with CNS tumors in order to decrease the injury of functional regions of the brain followed by increase in life quality and survival of patients. This study pursues a novel approach in planning for the treatment of brai...
متن کاملUsing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore brain function: cortical representations of language critical areas
Pre-operative determination of the dominant hemisphere for speech and speech associated sensory and motor regions has been of great interest for the neurological surgeons. This dilemma has been of at most importance, but difficult to achieve, requiring either invasive (Wada test) or non-invasive methods (Brain Mapping). In the present study we have employed functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging...

Background: Spatial learning and navigation is a fundamental cognitive ability consisting of multiple cognitive components. Despite intensive efforts conducted with the assistance of virtual reality technology and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) modality, the music effect on this cognition and the involved neuronal mechanisms remain elusive. Objectives: We aimed to investigate the...
متن کاملBrain Activity Map Extraction of Neuromyelitis Optica Patients Using Resting-State fMRI Data Based on Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuations and Regional Homogeneity Analysis
Introduction: Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) is a rare inflammatory disease of the central nervous system which generally affecting the spinal cord and optic nerve. Damage to the optic nerve can result in the patient's dim vision or even blindness, while the spinal cord damage may lead to sensory and motor paralysis and the weakness of the lower limbs in the patient. Magnetic Reson...
